History of the Shopify Platform

In order to do a proper Shopify review we wanted to give you some background on the company. Shopify is a Canadian e-commerce company headquartered in Ottawa, Ontario. This company develops software for online stores and retail point-of-sale systems (POS). The goal of the company was simple, offer an easy way to sell products online that frees sellers from all technical hurdles.

Shopify was founded by Tobias Lütke, Daniel Weinand, and Scott Lake in 2004, and was initially based on software online snowboard store.

Lütke used an open-source web application framework Ruby on Rails to build Snowdevil’s online store. They launched the platform after two months of development as “Shopify” in June 2006. Here is a timeline of major Shopify events:

  • Shopify launched an API platform and App Store in June 2009. The API allows developers to create applications for Shopify online stores and then sell them on the Shopify App Store.
  • In May 2010, Shopify launched a free mobile app on the AppleApp Store. This allows Shopify store owners to view and manage their stores from iOS mobile devices.
  • In August 2013, Shopify announced the launch of Shopify Payments, allowing merchants to accept credit cards without requiring a third party payment gateway. The company also announced the launch of an iPad-centric POS system.
  • By 2014, the platform hosted approximately 120,000 online retailers. It was also listed as #3 in Deloitte’s Fast50 in Canada, as well as #7 in Deloitte’s Fast 500 of North America.
  • Shopify acquired Boltmade on October 3, 2016
  • On December 5, 2016, Shopify acquired Tiny Hearts Ltd., a Toronto-based mobile product development studio. The building is now used as Shopify research and development office.
